A heated argument erupted on Tuesday, July 9, between the House of Representatives Committee on Women’s Affairs and Social Development and the Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, over the non-payment of N1.5 billion to contractors for completed jobs. The committee, led by Hon. Kafilat Ogbara, was investigating a petition from the contractors alleging the diversion of funds meant for their payment.

During the tense session, the minister was grilled over funds intended for the Office of the African First Ladies Peace Mission and asked to account for contract awards, project details, payment evidence, and completion certificates. She was also accused of misusing funds, including N45 million for a children’s party, N20 million for sanitary products, and N1.5 million for fuel from Abuja to Anambra.

“What was budgeted for 2023 from the accountant-general’s office, was it released to the account of the ministry of women affairs. Yes or no?” Ogbara asked.

Another member of the committee, Marie Ebikake accused the minister of sidelining staff of the ministry.

“Fortunately, I attended the last meeting and one of the reasons why we took you on oath was to get the truth from you and today you have deviated…,” Ebikake said, before she was interrupted by the minister.

“I take exception. I don’t like this allegation. I am no slave to anybody,” Kennedy-Ohanenye said.

“She should withdraw that statement she said about me. It is not fairness here. It is a trap but I am not going to jump into it. I fear nothing, I have stolen nothing!!”

“I have never tempered with anything and that’s why I fear nobody,” she submitted.

The session was adjourned indefinitely due to the intense exchange, with the minister expected to provide further responses to the committee’s queries.
