Man Arrested For Throwing Mother-In-Law To Her Death From Fifth-Floor Balcony

A man has been arrested for allegedly throwing his mother-in-law to her death from a fifth-floor balcony because she was “too much of a burden.”

The tragic incident occurred in the Russian city of Artyom, in the Primorsky region, where grainy footage captured the horrific moment the 84-year-old woman was dropped 50 feet from an apartment building. She died instantly from multiple injuries. Her identity has not been disclosed.

The 54-year-old son-in-law has been detained by police on suspicion of murder. Another video showed the unnamed man in handcuffs being escorted by police. He reportedly told officers he wanted to “relieve” his son of the burden of caring for the elderly woman, who allegedly had limited mobility. He believed it was too much for his son to continue caring for her, leading him to throw her from the balcony.

The suspect has been remanded in custody for two months pending further investigations. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison.

This incident comes just days after a separate case where a woman was jailed for seven and a half years for dropping her newborn daughter out of a window because she feared a baby would ruin her career.

Katarina Jovanovic, 28, from Lauffen am Neckar, Baden-Wuerttemberg State, Germany, was found guilty of manslaughter at the Heilbronn District Court on Wednesday, July 3.

Judges heard how Jovanovic had secretly given birth at home on September 12, ten months prior, and then dropped her baby from her apartment window almost 12 feet onto the tarmac below. Horrified passersby found the minutes-old infant’s body with a shattered skull underneath Jovanovic’s balcony and called the police.

Jovanovic admitted to the crime at the beginning of the trial in April but could not explain her actions to the court. She claimed she had not realized she was pregnant. However, the prosecution accused her of murder and of deliberately concealing her pregnancy from colleagues and neighbors.

Prosecutors argued that Jovanovic believed being a mother would spoil her career as an executive in Porsche’s legal department. Public prosecutor Mareike Hafendoerfer stated, “The accused was not prepared to put her life plans, especially her professional advancement, on hold for a child. That was her decision when the baby was born, and as a result, the criteria for a murder conviction are fulfilled.”
