Labour and Tinubu on Minimum wage

Representatives of organized labor led by Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo say that they have yet to reach a compromise with the federal government on the minimum wage. This statement came on Thursday after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

Festus Osifo, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), spoke with State House journalists following the meeting. He clarified that the discussions did not focus on financial specifics.

“The meeting was not about negotiation. We just had discussions and we did not discuss naira and kobo, but the meeting continues in a week’s time,” Osifo stated.

He added that the labor team highlighted issues such as naira devaluation and the economic challenges faced by workers. Joe Ajaero, in his remarks, echoed this sentiment, saying, “In real terms, it wasn’t a negotiation, it was a discussion. We had all the conversations with his team. By one week’s time, we didn’t go into naira and kobo. The status remains. We recommended N250,000 and the federal government said N62,000. That is where we are as of now.”

Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, described the meeting as a “father and children discussion.” She expressed optimism about the outcome, stating, “We had a very good meeting and I think we are hopeful that very soon everything will be resolved.”
