Healthcare Workers, NEPA Staff Ahead Of Police In Bribe Taking – NBS Report

A survey conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has uncovered a staggering trend of corruption in Nigeria revealing that healthcare workers and public utility staff were the leading bribe-takers in Nigeria in the year 2023.

The NBS report revealed that an estimated N721 billion was paid as bribe to public officials in 2023 alone. This represents 0.35% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The survey, titled “Corruption in Nigeria: Patterns and Trends,” revealed that 27% of Nigerians who interacted with public officials in the past year paid bribes, with an average cash bribe of N8,284. While this figure appears to be an increase from 2019, it actually represents a 29% decline in value when adjusted for inflation.

The survey also highlighted the most common places where bribes are paid, including public officials’ offices (35%), streets (36%), respondents’ homes (11%), and public buildings like restaurants and malls (7%).

Furthermore, the NBS report on bribes revealed that healthcare professionals and public utility officers were the most common recipients of bribes, with 30% and 24% of respondents reporting contact with these officials, respectively. Police officers came third, with a contact rate of 20%.

This disturbing trend underscores the pervasive nature of corruption in Nigeria and emphasizes the need for urgent action to address this issue. The NBS survey serves as a wake-up call for policymakers and stakeholders to work towards creating a more transparent and accountable system that discourages bribe, corruption and promotes good governance.
