Patrice Evra Gets 12-Month Suspended Jail Sentence For Family Abandonment
By Benjamin Abioye
Former Manchester United defender and French international, Patrice Evra, has received a suspended 12-month prison sentence for allegedly abandoning his family.
According to Le Parisien, a French daily newspaper that covers both international and national news, Evra was found guilty of abandoning his family for two years.
The 43-year-old former footballer is said to owe over £800,000 ($1 million) in alimony payments to Sandra Evra and their two children.
The sentence has been suspended for two years, but Evra must also pay €4,000 (£3,300/$4,300) for moral damages and €2,000 (£1,600/$2,100) for legal costs. Despite this, Evra has appealed the verdict. The couple split in 2020, and while divorce proceedings have begun, they are not yet finalized.
Reacting to the development, Evra’s lawyer, Jerome Boursican, stated, “Mr. Patrice Evra filed an appeal, knowing that he provided his wife with an apartment, a house with a swimming pool in the south of France, and that he lent her almost two million euros for her daily life. A sum that she refuses to return, which is the reason for this trial.”
As the legal battle continues, Evra and his soon-to-be ex-wife will have to resolve their issues in court. The date for his appeal hearing has yet to be determined.
Meanwhile, Evra has started a new chapter in his personal life. He is engaged to Margaux Alexandra, with whom he has two children. Throughout his distinguished football career, Evra played for clubs such as Marseille, Juventus, Nice, Monaco, and West Ham United.
