Sales Rep and Accomplice Sentenced to One Year in Prison for N39.5 Million Fraud
A High Court in Onitsha, Anambra State, has convicted and sentenced a sales representative, Ikechukwu Obiekwe, and his accomplice, Ugo Chukwudi, to one year in prison for diverting N39.5 million from Obiekwe’s company’s account.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Enugu Zonal Directorate prosecuted the duo on a 10-count charge of conspiracy, fraudulent conversion, stealing, and retention of crime proceeds between 2016 and 2018 in Onitsha.
Justice Victoria Nwoye delivered the judgment on July 9, 2024, finding the prosecution’s evidence sufficient to prove the defendants’ guilt beyond reasonable doubt. The court sentenced both men to one year in prison without an option of fine and ordered the forfeiture of the proceeds of their crime, N39,528,530, to the victim.
According to the EFCC, the victim had petitioned the Commission in May 2019, alleging that Obiekwe, his former apprentice, had diverted the funds from the company’s sales account and denied any involvement when confronted. Investigations revealed that Obiekwe used Chukwudi to transfer the funds to various accounts.
