Organized Labour Set New Date for Indefinite Strike
By Gideon Ayeni
In an update to their previous ultimatum, the Abia State chapter of Organized Labour has shifted the date for their indefinite strike, initially set for July 15, 2024.
The two labour centres comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), have given the state government an additional time to meet their demands.
The demands include the payment of the outstanding N30,000 minimum wage and N35,000 palliative allowance. The labour unions had initially issued a 14-day ultimatum, which expired without the government meeting their demands. A subsequent 7-day ultimatum was issued, with the strike set to begin on July 15.
However, in a new development, the labour unions have announced a new date for the indefinite strike, set to begin on July 28, 2024. This decision was reached after a general meeting on July 14, 2024. The labour unions are urging the government to take their demands seriously and meet the needs of the workers.
The workers in Abia State have been protesting against the non-payment of their salaries and the non-implementation of the N30,000 national minimum wage and the N35,000 palliative wage award approved by the federal government since October 2023. The labour unions are determined to get their demands met, and the strike is expected to continue until their demands are met.
The situation is being closely monitored, and the outcome of the negotiations between the labour unions and the government will determine the next course of action. The workers in Abia State are hopeful that their demands will be met, and they can return to work without further disruption.
