University Staff Unions to Stage Mass Protes Over Unpaid Salaries

Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Associated Institutions (NASU) are set to hold a mass protest in Abuja on Thursday.

The demonstration set to begin in the morning at the Unity Fountain, with union members marching to the office of the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, to voice their grievances and demands.

The unions are demanding the release of four months’ worth of outstanding salaries, which were withheld following their participation in the 2022 industrial action. While the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike lasted eight months, SSANU and NASU had a four-month strike. Despite a directive from President Bola Tinubu to pay the affected staff four months’ salaries, SSANU and NASU members claim they have not received their wages, whereas ASUU members have been paid.

To escalate their demands, SSANU and NASU instructed their members to stage a nationwide protest on July 9 across all state chapters, with a follow-up national protest planned for today in Abuja. This decision was communicated in a joint circular signed by NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi and SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim, addressed to all branch chairmen of the respective unions.

The protest follows a two-week ultimatum issued in June, during which SSANU and NASU called on the Federal Government to address their outstanding issues. As the situation develops, all eyes are on the government to see if they will respond to the unions’ demands and prevent further disruption in the education sector.
