The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, revealed on Thursday why Organized Labour accepted President Bola Tinubu’s proposal of a N70,000 minimum wage.

GWG.ng reports that President Bola Tinubu proposed the new national minimum wage during a meeting with the leadership of the Organized Labour in Abuja, as announced by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. This decision came after a prior meeting held with Labour leaders the previous week.
Onanuga, through his official X handle, @aonanuga, announced at 03:31 pm, “Breaking: President Bola Tinubu has approved a N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers with a promise to review the national minimum wage law every three years.”
He added, “President Tinubu also promised to find ways to assist the private sector and the sub-nationals in paying the minimum wage. The President announced these decisions during a meeting held with leaders of TUC and NLC on Thursday in Abuja, the second meeting within seven days.”
The new minimum wage, once approved by the National Assembly, will replace the N30,000 minimum wage, which expired on April 18, 2024.
Labour leaders have praised President Tinubu for the new minimum wage saying it was accepted in recognition of the significant gesture. Additionally, President Tinubu has vowed to use his discretionary powers to address the demands of university unions seeking unpaid salaries for four months.
