Joe Biden Endorses Kamala Harris For US President

US President Joe Biden has announced that he will not seek re-election, stating that “it is in the best interest of my party and the country,” following that by endorsing his vice, Kamala Harris for the top job.

This surprising decision comes just four months before the presidential election, dramatically altering the landscape of the race for the White House.

The announcement follows several weeks of mounting pressure from fellow Democrats, particularly after Biden’s poor performance in a debate against Republican Donald Trump in late June. Following this debate, Biden faced criticism for his incoherent speech and weak voice, which his party attributed to a cold.

On Sunday evening, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his preferred candidate in the upcoming presidential race. In a letter posted to his social media account, he expressed that serving as president has been the greatest honor of his life. He wrote, “And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling the duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

Calls for Biden to step aside grew louder following his debate performance, with many congressional Democrats concerned that his campaign could jeopardize their re-election prospects in November. Several senators also joined the chorus, urging him to withdraw.

While Harris enjoys Biden’s support, it remains uncertain whether she will be the unopposed candidate. The Democratic National Convention, set to begin on August 19 in Chicago, is now the focal point, with the party accelerating the process to meet an August 7 candidate certification deadline in Ohio. This means the new nominee should be confirmed in just over two weeks.

In his statement, Biden thanked Vice President Harris, calling her an “extraordinary partner.” He also expressed gratitude to the American people for their faith and trust, adding, “I believe today and always have: that there is nothing America can’t do – when we do it together. We just have to remember we are the United States of America.” Biden mentioned that he would address the nation on this matter next week.

Recently, Biden returned to his home in Delaware after being diagnosed with Covid. Despite this, he stated on Friday that he was looking forward to “getting back on the campaign trail next week.” Previously, Biden had asserted that only the “Lord Almighty” could make him withdraw, but he later conceded that he would consider stepping down if he faced a health condition.

Reacting to Biden’s decision, Republican nominee Donald Trump said on his Truth Social platform that Biden “was not fit to run for president.”
