House Speaker Calls for Biden’s Immediate Resignation After Reelection Withdrawal

Speaker Mike Johnson has called for the resignation of President Joe Biden following his withdrawal from the US presidential race

House Speaker Mike Johnson’s demand for the resignation of President Joe Biden from office is on the claim that his incapacity to run for office amounts to failure to serve.

Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, released a statement on Sunday, asserting that if Biden is unfit to run for president, he is also unfit to serve and should step down.

This call for resignation came after Biden ended his reelection bid and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to succeed him, a significant move that has shaken up the presidential race. Johnson criticized the Democratic Party, accusing them of invalidating the votes of over 14 million Americans who chose Biden as the Democratic nominee, labeling it a contradiction to their claim of being the party of democracy.

The White House, however, responded that Biden plans to complete his term, emphasizing his achievements in reversing economic downturns, reducing violent crime, and strengthening international alliances. White House spokesman Andrew Bates highlighted Biden’s accomplishments and his commitment to continuing his term to deliver more results for the American people.

Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell also criticized the Democratic Party for allegedly overturning the will of the voters but did not join Johnson in calling for Biden’s resignation. Meanwhile, GOP Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina announced plans to introduce a resolution urging Vice President Harris to invoke the 25th Amendment to assume Biden’s duties, questioning Biden’s cognitive ability to serve out his term.

In contrast, GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska praised Biden’s decision to step aside in the 2024 presidential election, stating that it was in the best interest of the country.
