Atiku Abubakar Backs Nationwide Protests, Criticizes Tinubu’s Government for Threats

Nigeria’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has voiced strong support for the upcoming nationwide protests against the country’s economic difficulties.

In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Atiku reminded President Bola Tinubu’s administration that peaceful protests are a fundamental right guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria. He criticized the government’s attempt to accuse opposition figures and threaten action against the protests, calling it a futile effort to distract from the real issues.

Atiku pointed out that Nigerians, including those who support Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), are suffering due to the government’s policies. He said that the widespread hunger, anger, and despair reflect the failures of the current administration.

“The rights of citizens to protest are clearly protected by the Nigerian Constitution and upheld by our courts,” Atiku stated. “Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution guarantees the right to peaceful assembly and association.”

He further criticized the government for trying to undermine the protests by fabricating claims about who is behind them. “It is ironic that those now trying to suppress these rights were themselves leading protests in 2012,” he said.

Atiku concluded by emphasizing that a responsible government should ensure a safe environment for peaceful protests. “Any attempt to suppress these rights is not only unconstitutional but also a direct attack on our democracy.”
