BREAKING: Tinubu Takes New Step On National Minimum Wage

After much deliberations, President Bola Tinubu has sent the new national minimum wage bill to the National Assembly for consideration and approval.

The President’s letter, conveying his request to the lawmakers, was read during the plenary of the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

 A similar letter to the Senate was also read on the floor of the upper chamber.

Tinubu also sought their approval to reduce the time for periodic review of the national minimum wage from five years to three years.

The bill is expected to legalise the ₦70,000 minimum wage recently agreed upon between Organised Labour, the Organised Private Sector and the federal government.

President Tinubu, in his letter to the lawmakers, asked for a speedy passage of the bill to ensure immediate implementation for the benefit of Nigerian workers.

When signed into law, the new minimum wage is expected to take effect from April 2024, meaning workers will be paid arrears of their increase from this period.

The President also wrote the lawmakers seeking amendment to the Nigeria Police Act in accordance with section 58 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

The amendment seeks to alter the Police in relation to the appointment and tenure of office of the Inspector General of Police.

The requests were contained in the Police Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024, seeking to amend the Police Act 2020 with respect to the appointment and tenure of the Inspector General of the Police.
