Dele Momodu on Tinubu's

A seasoned journalist and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dele Momodu, has criticized President Tinubu’s approach to appointments, accusing him of compensating incompetent friends and associates instead of appointing qualified individuals.

During an interview with Channels TV on July 22, Dele Momodu expressed his concerns about the competence of Tinubu’s cabinet. He argued that the President’s reliance on familiar faces, rather than capable professionals, is harming the country’s progress.

Momodu stated, “What we have today is that someone transferred the Lagos template to Abuja, and that’s why we’re failing.” He emphasized that appointing individuals based on personal relationships rather than merit cannot continue if Nigeria is to succeed.

Reflecting on past administrations, Momodu noted that previous leaders like Ibrahim Babangida and Olusegun Obasanjo had attempted to assemble capable cabinets, which he believes is lacking in Tinubuā€™s government. He said, “If you ask me today to name ten ministers in Tinubu’s cabinet and tell you what they did or did not do before they were appointed, I will struggle. That is the truth.”

Momodu lamented that many of Tinubuā€™s appointees are overly dependent on the President and, as a result, are unable to provide honest feedback. “A lot of the people around there now, their lives totally depend on Tinubu. They cannot tell him the truth. I know what a lot of them say behind when they see us,” he explained.

He also highlighted the excellence of Nigerians abroad, saying, “I’ve traveled a bit. There is nowhere, up to Australia, that I did not meet Nigerians doing great things. Where are those people? In today’s Nigeria, it’s either you are the son of, the daughter ofā€¦ Nigeria cannot continue to operate on the basis of compensation.”
