Looking Beyond The Senate President’s ‘Side Chicks’ (GWG Editorial)
The flurry of lurid allegations of sustaining a number of celebrities as side chicks recently heaped on the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio should be a bother to the Nigerian political establishment.
Senator Akpabio has been alleged in an expose by one of the country’s leading but esoteric online publications to be involved in amorous relationships with some of the leading female celebrities in the land.
While Senator Akpabio and his media aides have been largely mute on the allegations refusing to dignify the allegations against the country’s number three citizen, a number of the celebrities have come out with daring denunciations of the claims.
GWG.ng will not glorify these allegations which so far have not been buttressed with any serious evidence. In the case of one celebrity, Akpabio’s presence in her celebration of a global feat has been the only link. But there were so many other top political actors. Another of the alleged side chicks who is married has in an open denunciation claimed not to have had any personal contact with the Senate President and is threatening to sue.
Only one of the ladies who removed a possible identity linkage with Akpabio from her social media status could have aroused questionable looks. But that is where it ends, nothing more to it.
These are undoubtedly difficult times for Mrs Ekaette Akpabio, the wife of the Senate President with her husband being vilified across social media over unverified reports of intimacy.
GWG.ng affirms that the power of the media to bring political actors to account should not be misused for whatever reason.
The accomplishments of our female celebrities should not be devalued by twisting their feminine endowments into imaginary fantasies with top political actors.
However, the undeserved public crucifixion of the Senate President was preceded by a public falling out with some fellow female political actors.
Speaking at the groundbreaking of the Abuja Bus Terminal on July 2, 2024, Senator Akpabio publicly threw his female colleague, Senator Ireti Kingibe under the bus with an encouragement to Minister Nyesom Wike not to be distracted by her assertions.
Following that, Senator Akpabio while presiding at a Senate session upbraided Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan not to act as if she were in a nightclub.
GWG.ng also recalls the public falling away between Akpabio and the erstwhile managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Joy Nunieh.
These public disparagements of women do not enhance Akpabio’s spectacle in the public space.
GWG.ng will not in any way describe Akpabio as a misogynist but asserts that the chronicle of his political relationship with some of these women do not enhance what some still see as the promising political horizon before Akpabio.
Meanwhile, GWG.ng firmly rebuts the so far unconfirmed romantic dalliances with side chicks as linked to the Senate President and encourages him and the women to fix their heads above the fray
