A 35-year-old man, Magaji Yellow, has been arrested by the police in Kano State for allegedly attacking and killing his brother over an unpaid debt of N270,000. The arrest comes nearly six years after the incident.

Magaji Yellow, from Kunya village in Minjibir LGA of Kano State, is accused of conspiring with two others to murder his brother, Gausu Umar Sadam, on August 10, 2018, in a bid to cover up the debt he owed.

Kano Police Command spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, detailed the incident in a statement: “On August 10, 2018, we received a report from a resident of Kunya Village in Minjibir Local Government Area of Kano State that Magaji Yellow (38) and others attacked his brother, Gausu Umar Sadam (35), with dangerous weapons. They cut his leg vein and inflicted other injuries before fleeing the scene.”

The victim was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel.

An initial investigation led to the arrest of two accomplices, Rabiu Sarki Lots and Nasiru Adamu Namade, both from the same village. They were charged with criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

Under the directive of the State Commissioner of Police, CP Salman Dogo Garba, a combined team of detectives was tasked with tracking down the principal suspect. On July 15, 2024, after nearly six years of sustained follow-up and intelligence-led operations, Magaji Yellow was finally apprehended.

During a discreet investigation, Magaji Yellow confessed to the crime. He admitted that they lured the victim to Wailari Quarters in Minjibir Local Government Area under the pretense of repaying the debt, only to kill him instead.
