My Problems With Peter Obi – Kenneth Okonkwo Explains Exit From Labour Party

Kenneth Okonkwo, a staunch supporter of Peter Obi and a notable figure in the Labour Party, has announced his decision to part ways with the party.

This move comes after a series of disheartening experiences and perceived leadership failures within the party, which Okonkwo detailed in an open letter to his countrymen.

In the letter titled “My Political Journey to a Great Nigeria,” Okonkwo expressed his unwavering commitment to building a great Nigeria based on equity, justice, and fairness. However, he lamented the current state of political affairs, criticizing both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for failing to lead the country effectively.

Okonkwo voiced his disillusionment with the Labour Party, particularly with the approach of Peter Obi to leadership and party management. Okonkwo recalled his initial high hopes for the party following the 2023 general elections, believing that Peter Obi would spearhead the creation of a solid party of integrity to challenge the existing political order.

However, Okonkwo detailed several incidents that led to his loss of confidence in Obi. He cited Obi’s public declaration that he never promised to build a strong Labour Party, his failure to organize an inclusive party convention, and his refusal to disassociate from the alleged corrupt activities of the National Working Committee.

In his letter, Okonkwo stated, “I am shocked that PO could not openly support the noble efforts of the Labour Unions who founded the Labour Party as a base to fight for the welfare of workers.” He emphasized his frustration with the lack of decisive leadership, which has left the party in disarray and unable to effectively challenge the current political establishment.

Despite his departure from the Labour Party, Okonkwo reaffirmed his dedication to the Nigerian people and their aspirations for a better future. He stated, “There’s also absolutely nothing personal with my decision to adjust my relationship with HE Peter Obi. It’s 100% based on principles and my conviction that I need a more decisive, bold, brave leader with integrity and team spirit.”

Okonkwo concluded his letter by asserting his intention to continue his political journey independently, focusing on uniting like-minded individuals and stakeholders who share his vision for a great Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of good governance and the right to protest, urging the government to address the root causes of public discontent.
