Protest: Tunji-Ojo Appeals for Patience, Says Tinubu Solving Problems Of 100 Years Ago (Video)

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has urged Nigerians to give President Bola Tinubu more time to tackle the nation’s economic challenges which he said predated the nation’s independence before resorting to protest.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Tunji-Ojo called for patience and patriotism from those planning to participate in the August protest against economic hardship.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized that President Tinubu should not be expected to resolve long-standing economic issues overnight as against the desire of those who he said want to protest.

“An economy is not built overnight. What you see today is an accumulated mismanagement over the last 100, 60, 30 years,” he said.

He highlighted that President Tinubu campaigned on a platform of ‘Renewed Hope’ and not as a magician. “Mr President, to the best of my knowledge, never campaigned to be a magician; he campaigned as a statesman, he campaigned on the basis of ‘Renewed Hope’. Before hope could be renewed, it had dwindled. When you want to reboot hope that has been down, you need a bit of time, and we are on the right step,” Tunji-Ojo added in canvassing against the protest.

Tunji-Ojo appealed for all avenues of engagement and dialogue to be explored before resorting to a nationwide protest. He stressed that President Tinubu has taken bold steps, including the removal of the petrol subsidy, which he described as a ‘cancer,’ to set the nation on a path to recovery.

Tunji-Ojo likened Nigeria’s current situation to a surgical process, asserting that the country would emerge healthy and strong. “We are pleading for time,” he said.

The planned protest, which has gained significant traction on social media, is set to be held across all states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, in August. The protest comes in response to skyrocketing prices of food and basic commodities, as Nigerians grapple with one of the country’s worst inflation rates and economic crises, exacerbated by the government’s twin policies of petrol subsidy removal and forex window unification.
