Fake Lecturers Arrested In Nigerian University

Two individuals posing as lecturers at Bayero University Kano (BUK) have been apprehended for allegedly selling books to students under false pretenses.

This was confirmed in a statement by Bala Abdullahi, the university’s Publication Secretary, on behalf of the Registrar.

The suspects, identified as D. Ilube and C. Eke, reportedly infiltrated a lecture hall in the Faculty of Engineering, where they misrepresented themselves as faculty members to first-year students. They presented four different textbooks on the Use of English, Statistics, Nigerian People and Culture, and Algebra and Geometry Mathematics, coercing students to purchase them under the threat of failing their Continuous Assessment (CA) if they didn’t comply.

Intimidated by these threats, many students purchased the books. However, the university’s security team swiftly intervened following a report, apprehending the impostors.

“Security operatives arrested the two individuals on July 25, 2024, on charges of criminal trespass, impersonation, and cheating,” the statement detailed. “During preliminary investigations, the suspects admitted to writing the books and confessed to the allegations, citing unemployment as their motive.”

The suspects further disclosed that this was their second visit to the state, having previously targeted Kano State Polytechnic earlier this year. The books in their possession were of poor quality and suspected to be pirated copies.

“This incident highlights a troubling trend in our higher education institutions, with fraudsters posing as academicians to deceive and exploit students,” Abdullahi noted.

The university has announced plans to transfer the suspects to the police for further investigation and potential charges. Additionally, the university aims to alert students about the incident to prevent similar occurrences. Enhanced security measures have also been implemented to prevent future incidents of impersonation.
