Why Keyamo Suspended NAMA’s Planned 800% Levy Hike

In a surprising development, the minister of aviation, Festus Keyamo, has suspended the earlier announcement by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) to increase its navigational charges.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection of NAMA, Abdullahi Musa, on Monday.

GWG.ng gathered that the NAMA spokesman noted that the backtrack by the agency was in response to the directive of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.

Musa added that the decision follows the Minister’s recognition of the current economic challenges faced by Nigerians.

Last Friday, NAMA announced its intention to raise its navigation charge by 800 per cent, a decision that raised concerns from both passengers and stakeholders in the aviation sector.

Musa further noted that Keyamo harped the need for further consultation before implementing any changes, highlighting the importance of being sensitive to the plight of Nigerians amidst these economic challenges.

GWG.ng reports that Keyamo’s decision is coming ahead of the planned nationwide protest against hunger, scheduled for 10 days, beginning from August 1.

In another development, the President Tinubu-led-government disclosed that it had started distributing 50kg rice at the rate of N40,000 as part of the President’s measure to address the hunger in the land.

Despite these moves by Nigerian leaders, the people have planned to proceed with the protest, beginning from Wednesday, August 1.
