In a tense standoff, police in Bauchi resorted to firing teargas to disperse a large crowd of protesters who had gathered to decry the escalating cost of living in the state.

The demonstrators, numbering in the hundreds, had converged on the Emir’s palace, seeking an audience with the traditional ruler to air their grievances.

As the protesters approached the palace, security forces deployed teargas in an attempt to break up the crowd. The sudden use of force sent demonstrators scrambling for safety, with many seen fleeing the scene to avoid the irritating gas.

The protesters, undeterred by the police action, remained resolute in their demands for a meeting with the Emir as they sought to express their concerns about the rising cost of living, which has left many struggling to make ends meet.

The situation in Bauchi remains volatile, with protesters vowing to continue their demonstrations until their demands are met. The use of teargas by police has only added to the tensions, raising questions about the authorities’ commitment to allowing citizens to exercise their right to peaceful assembly.
