Hunger Protesters Attack Lawmaker’s Mansion (video)

A viral video showing protesters attacking a lawmaker’s mansion in Yobe state, has emerged on social media.

In the video seen by GWG.ng on X on Tuesday, some youths were seen burning a mansion built by a serving House of Representatives member, Nazifi Sani Gumel, representing Gumel/Maigatari/Sule Tankarkar/Gagarawa Federal Constituency. 

According to SaharaReporters, the youths accused the lawmaker of neglecting their constituency after his election 14 months ago during the last general elections.

As seen in the video, a swamp of protesters comprising adults, youth and children were seen around the vicinity of the lawmaker’s huge mansion.

While some of the youths were seen uprooting iron rods from the vicinity, others were seen hitting the walls of the mansion with iron rods. Another section of the crowd of protesters were captured, trying to gain entrance into the lawmaker’s mansion.

From the side of the lawmaker’s mansion, smoke was also seen bellowing into the sky, signifying that the Protesters had touched the mansion with fire.

Gwg.ng recalls that before the Nationwide protest against hunger and bad governance commenced on August 1, many lawmakers reportedly fled the country for fear of what may happen to them at the cause of the Nationwide protest.

Gwg also reports that the protests have continued despite President Tinubu’s appeal for the protest to be suspended.

Tuesday being the 6th day of the protest, protesters are out marching on the streets to insist that their demands are met.

Amongst some of their demands are:

1.HUNGER

Reduce the cost of food immediately, with solutions like food importation, subsidised credits, and intervene in logistics and storage challenges.

2. COST OF LIVING

Address the rising cost of living: Reduce pump price of fuel to N195/ltr to reflect current economic challenges; Reduce electricity tariffs, and import taxes.

3. INSECURITY

Curb insecurity across the country: stop diverting security resources (money & people) and immediately prosecute known instigators & criminals. Resettle internally displaced persons (IDPs) immediately.

4. GOVERNMENT WASTE / COST OF GOVERNANCE/ BLOATED NASS PERMANENTLY

Reduce by 50% the running costs of the executive and National Assembly and fully implement the Oronsaye Report to scrap agencies and reduce the size of government. Scrap hardship, entertainment, and all other NASS allowances and immediately remove all 7,447 projects worth N2.24 trillion inserted by the National Assembly in the 2024 federal budget.

6. PROTECT FARMS AND FARMERS

Declare a state of emergency on education and increase budgetary allocation to education and healthcare by 20% and revert to the old National Anthem. 5 Demands by October 1.
