Nigeria Puts Russia, Others On Notice Over #EndBadGovernance Protests

Though it has strongly denied any role in the ongoing protest against bad governance and hunger in Nigeria, the world’s second most powerful country Russia has been subtly put on notice not to join the fray.

The Federal Government has threatened to take appropriate action against any country that might be behind the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, made this known while addressing members of the Diplomatic Corps in Abuja on Wednesday, stressing that Nigeria is a sovereign state and will not tolerate any interference in its domestic affairs by foreign elements bent on giving support to the protesters.

This position of the government might be a reaction to the reported cases of the protesters waving the flag of Russia in some states and calling on President Vladimir Putin to come to the aid of the Nigerian citizens amid the hunger and hardship ravaging most people in the country.

GWG.ng had reported that Russia, through its embassy in Abuja, dissociated itself from the protesters waving its flag and denied any involvement in organising the protests.

The protests, which started on August 1 across the country, quickly degenerated into violence leading to deaths, looting and destruction of property.

GWG.ng reports that besides the waving of its flags and open calls on Putin to intervene into the affairs of Nigeria, many are also looking at the chummy relationship between Russia and the three Sahel countries, Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali which have formed a close relationship with Russia at the expense of the collegiate cordiality with other members of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS that has President Bola Tinubu as its chairman for the second year running.

GWG.ng reports that while Russia was not named in the advisory to the diplomatic corp, the message is bound to make the Eastern power to be more cautious in its handling of the protest in Nigeria.
