Reactions As Peter Obi Explains Why Northern Protesters Flew Russian Flags (Video)
By Benjamin Abioye
Obi shared his thoughts through a video posted on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, where some Northerners were seen displaying Russian flags and explaining their reasons.
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 election, has addressed the motives behind the display of Russian flags in the Northern part of the country during the #EndBadGovernance protests.
Obi shared his thoughts through a video posted on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, where some Northerners were seen displaying Russian flags and explaining their reasons.
In the video, two men expressed their frustrations. One man said, “People are dying because of hunger. Let the president talk and remove this fuel subsidy. We are looking for help from Russia.” This highlights their dissatisfaction with the ongoing economic hardships and their appeal to Russia for support.
Another man in the video explained their stance further, saying, “Russia is communist. The West and the IMF, they are capitalists. They are actually exploiting our resources. Our leaders have been their puppets and we cannot take it anymore.” His comments reflect a belief that Western institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are exploiting Nigeria’s resources, and that the country’s leaders are complicit in this exploitation.
According to GWG.ng, during the nationwide protests that began on August 1st, some #EndBadGovernance protesters in Northern states were flying the Russian flag, while others called for a military coup. This prompted the Nigerian Military High Command to issue warnings to citizens agitating for military rule. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Mustapha, addressed journalists after an emergency meeting with President Bola Tinubu, stating that those flying the Russian flag in Nigeria have committed a treasonable offense.

@Its_ereko: You think they don’t hear what’s happening in Niger Republic and Mali and Burkina Faso
@E_Mbuyazi: The same way you acquire knowledge, they read and listen to news. The Northerner is always underestimated, he might not be articulate but is well informed as regards politics, local and international. And recently, the Juntas in Burkina Faso, Niger, etc, have been romanticized, and they are aware.
@DanFunctionGuy: They even posses more information that we do. You see that radio they listen to, BBC Hausa, voice of America hausa, Dutch radio Hausa, radio France Hausa. This are international radio stations with programs and news in Hausa.
@topeodubela:Now I get it…good intention bad execution. I don’t think any of those countries directly invited the Russians. You can have the whole information and present your thing silly, that ???something, the sponsors will sell some reasons to them too🤔 not convinced, bad pple behind dis
@Alfred_chiedu: Until it is time to vote.
@akufamas: Fear that small radio
@Samuelodey14: The same Northerners voted Shetima in the past and have been voting bad leaders since 1999. make Una allow us hear word with smart northern youths
@savndaniel: Quite a brilliant take and a better appreciation of the issues at the global level. Chief Femi Falana recently mooted the idea that the IMF is destroying Nigeria with its anti-Nigeria policies and ill-fated advice.
@psabode: How did we get to be thinking the self/serving political elites, puppets to western governments and capitalists qualify as “our leaders?” Real leaders bring vision of collective greatness and organize followers for the work necessary to achieve the vision. Within the organization, some followers assume management roles and the rest are on the line either in supervision or in operations.
As puppets, these dominant non-leaders use their power to make the organization serve (not their vision for they have none) but the interest or vision of the puppet masters. In the process, the workers suffer and the lowest workers suffer the most!
@OBINATIONS_NG: Why should a country be siting on raw materials Such as tin, iron ore, aluminium, Silver glass and jet fuel in abundance yet buy a Yatch and an airplane if not to acquire scraps of western capitalists at the expense of the country industries
@Plugxox: Pls prove to me that they are puppets!!
The idea that our leaders are selected by the west or are puppets to the west is extremely flawed!! Very very very flawed.
I watched my people vote obasanjo and say it’s a compensation to the Yorubas for what happened to abiola
