Olympics: Adeyanju Wants Sports Minister, Enoh Sacked

In the wake of Nigeria’s disappointing performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju has penned an open letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, demanding the immediate dismissal of the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh.

Adeyanju expressed his deep dissatisfaction with the Minister’s handling of the sports sector, citing his failure to implement the National Sports Industry Policy, abandonment of sports facilities, and overall lack of preparation and competence. According to Adeyanju, these shortcomings directly contributed to Nigeria’s poor showing at the Olympics.

He highlighted several incidents that marred Nigeria’s participation in the Games, including the disqualification of Favour Ofilli from the 100m event due to administrative negligence, the disqualification of the 4x100m relay team for crossing lanes, and various eligibility issues caused by poor documentation and registration. Additionally, Adeyanju pointed out the inadequate preparation of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigres, who were forced to endure an eight-hour road journey for their first match after being excluded from the opening parade.

The activist also criticized the lack of proper equipment for athletes, noting that one team member had to borrow a bicycle due to the unavailability of appropriate gear.

Adeyanju called on President Tinubu to not only sack the Sports Minister but also initiate a probe into the ministry’s handling of the Olympics. He urged the President to direct the Permanent Secretary of the ministry to submit a comprehensive list of all officials who were part of the delegation to the Games, to ensure accountability and identify those responsible for the failures.

In his letter, Adeyanju emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to uncover the “rot” within the sports ministry and restore Nigeria’s sports sector to its former glory.
