BREAKING: Speaker Abbas Withdraws Controversial, Compulsory National Anthem Bill

In a swift response to widespread public backlash, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen has officially withdrawn the controversial bill that sought to impose a N5 million fine on Nigerians who refuse to recite the national anthem.

The National Anthem bill, which was met with strong rejection across the country, also included a provision for up to 10 years imprisonment for offenders.

The withdrawal comes on the heels of mounting pressure from citizens, advocacy groups, and civil society organizations, who condemned the bill as draconian and a blatant infringement on constitutional rights. The Take It Back Movement, a prominent rights advocacy group, had earlier threatened to mobilize nationwide protests if the bill were to be passed into law.

Following the uproar, Hon. Tajudeen, who sponsored the bill, decided to retract it from the legislative process, acknowledging the overwhelming opposition the national anthem faced from the public.

The controversial bill had sparked outrage for proposing severe penalties, not only for refusing to recite the national anthem but also for destroying national symbols. The proposal had ignited fears of further erosion of civil liberties in the country.
