Federal Ministry of Education Demands Probe Of Fake Letter Promoting Same-Sex Marriage Debate
The Federal Ministry of Education has raised concerns over a letter falsely attributed to the ministry, which advocates for a national debate on the legalization of same-sex marriage in Nigeria.
The letter, allegedly issued by an organization known as Creative Africa Initiative, has prompted the Ministry to call for an immediate investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS).
In an official communication dated 9th August 2024, addressed to the Director-General of the DSS, Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, expressed alarm over the potential repercussions of such a letter.
The Ministry emphasized that the topic of same-sex marriage is highly sensitive and goes against the cultural and religious values of the majority of Nigerians, as well as existing Nigerian laws.
The Ministry warned that the introduction of such a controversial topic into public discourse, especially through a formal debate, could lead to significant disruptions in public peace and social cohesion.
The letter further stated that this initiative could be interpreted as an attempt to undermine Nigerian laws and destabilize societal norms, thereby causing unnecessary tension and division among the populace.
Dr. Sani-Gwarzo requested that the DSS thoroughly investigate the origins and intentions behind the letter from Creative Africa Initiative. He stressed the importance of scrutinizing such activities to prevent any incitement of discord within the country. The Permanent Secretary also urged the DSS to take all necessary steps to safeguard the peace and stability of the nation.
