Emmanuel Nwaorie, a 200L Medical student of the University of Maiduguri who reportedly slumped while reading was abandoned to die after medical attention was delayed for two hours at the university’s teaching hospital, a colleague of his has said.

According to reports, Emmanuel was  studying with his friends at Café C in the university when he suddenly slumped and died.

Eyewitness, @Nigerian Doctor who disclosed how Emmanuel slumped via his X handle, recounted, “This is an account of the events surrounding the death of Emmanuel Nwaorie, a 200L MBBS student of the University of Maiduguri on 13th August, 2024.

“We were together reading in café C when he slumped at around 7pm. We carried him to the school clinic. At the school clinic, we met a nurse who administered dextrose saline to our friend Emmanuel and when it finished, he was given another dextrose saline and at no point did a doctor come in. She administered some other injections which I don’t know their names.

” When we got to the clinic, his BP was taken and it was 100/80 according to the nurse. After a while, he opened his eyes and the nurse continued administering the drugs and dextrose saline but after some time he lost consciousness again and the nurse took his BP again and it was now 210 systolic.”

” At this point, we became agitated and accused the nurse of her medications being ineffective which prompted the nurse to write a referral (on behalf of the doctor who was unavailable) for us to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital A&E unit. This was already around 9pm.

The eyewitness said after the referral was written, we took the school ambulance to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital which is about 10 minutes away from the location of the school clinic.

On arrival at the A&E unit of the TH, “we found only one intern and some nurses at the A&E. The nurses on duty informed us of unavailability of stretcher to bring our friend down from the ambulance. We had to carry him by hand unto a wheel chair and he was still breathing at this point.

“We handed over the referral letter which stated that our friend had a hypertensive emergency to the nurses at the A&E and their reply was that there was no space or available bed, hence, we’d have to wait our turn.

“After about 15 minutes of waiting, we became agitated once again which prompted us to call our senior colleagues.

When they got to us, they met the house officer on call and pleaded on behalf of our friend to be attended to, it was only the intern that was in the ER where more than 20 patients were and there was no single resident doctor available, hence the intern couldn’t even give us any attention.

“Our senior colleagues now contacted another doctor who is a Resident Doctor at UMTH who was at home and our friend was still sitting in the wheelchair waiting his turn. Finally, when the doctor that was contacted arrived, (he was not the doc on call, he only came when we called his attention), he managed to get a bed and only then was any medical attention given to him. This was around 11pm.

Note that we arrived at the TH around 9pm and treatment commenced around 11pm. As soon as the “treatment” was commenced, I had to leave and go back to my place of work since I’m juggling work and study.

“After some time, which was now around 12am, I was called and told that our friend had died in the emergency room. Also, that the Dean of Student Affairs of the University of Maiduguri had arrived just at that point in time and the narrative was now changed to “our friend had already died at the school clinic before we brought him to the TH.”
