30-Year-Old Woman Arrested After Concealing AK-47 in Garri Sack

A 30-year-old woman, Hauwa Yusuf, was arrested by operatives of the Special Tactical Squad (STS) on the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway after being caught with an AK-47 rifle and four magazines hidden inside a sack of garri.

The arrest of Hauwa Yusuf while conveying the AK-47 rifle took place during a routine stop-and-search operation.

The Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, disclosed the details while parading the suspects at the STS Headquarters in Abuja on Friday. According to Adejobi, Yusuf confessed that she was sent by a notorious bandit, Aminu Basullube, who is infamous for terrorizing the Katsina State area, to collect the arms from the Danum Madam Camp in the state.

Adejobi stated, “On August 14, 2024, acting on credible intelligence, operatives of the STS intercepted Hauwa Yusuf while she was traveling from Lafia, Nasarawa State, to Katsina State in a Sienna bus along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway. A search of her belongings revealed an AK-47 rifle and four AK magazines concealed in a sack of garri.”

During interrogation, Yusuf claimed that she was unaware of the contents of the sack. She explained, “I didn’t know that a gun was hidden inside. They asked me to go and bring millet, but instead, they gave me this sack of garri. Even when I saw something unusual, I felt uneasy. I was paid ₦130,000 to deliver the garri to Katsina, with ₦15,000 set aside for my transport. I realize now that I made a mistake by not asking more questions.”

In a separate operation from the arrest of Hauwa Yusuf with an AK-47 riffle, the STS also arrested a suspect identified as Musa Saidu in Igboho, Oyo State. Saidu, who had been away from his community in Kigakwu, Kaduna State for five years, returned and began spending large sums of money, raising suspicion among locals.

Adejobi revealed that Saidu confessed to being involved in cattle rustling under the command of a gang leader named Haruna in the Birnin Gwari forest of Kaduna State. Saidu admitted to receiving 25 cows as proceeds from his criminal activities, which he later sold for ₦4.7 million. He used the money to purchase Bajaj motorcycles and more cattle in Oyo State.

Saidu explained that he turned to cattle rustling after falling victim to the same crime. “I know cattle rustling is illegal, but I did it because my cattle were stolen. After making money from the crime, I stopped and returned to my village to enjoy the proceeds,” he said.

Both Yusuf and Saidu are currently in police custody as investigations continue.
