It Took Oshiomhole 3 Months To Convince Us To Back Obaseki For Governor – Shaibu (Video)

Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has criticized Governor Godwin Obaseki for allegedly failing to acknowledge his reinstatement to office by the court.

Shaibu asserted that he played a pivotal role in making Obaseki the governor of Edo State, suggesting that without his support, Obaseki would not have risen to power noting how it took Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to convince him and other members of his inner court to back Obaseki for the 2016 election.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” on Friday, Shaibu revealed that it took the intervention of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole to persuade him to back Obaseki’s gubernatorial bid. He claimed that Obaseki, at the time, lacked both the political experience and financial resources to contest the election.

“Obaseki was not a politician and wasn’t financially strong enough to run for office. Oshiomhole brought him into the race, and it took him three months to convince me and our supporters to back Obaseki. When we finally agreed, we used our resources, brought in our friends to raise funds, and leveraged our political influence to make him governor,” Shaibu stated.

The relationship between Obaseki and Shaibu has deteriorated over issues related to the upcoming governorship election in Edo State. Shaibu highlighted that he was selected as Obaseki’s deputy to bolster the party’s ticket with his political acumen, given that Obaseki lacked political experience.

Shaibu also alleged that Obaseki has attempted to undermine his political ambitions by cutting off financial support, revealing that he has not received any government funds for the past year despite the court judgment.

“Obaseki’s Lawlessness”

Following his reinstatement as deputy governor by a Federal High Court, Shaibu resumed his duties and directed his staff to do the same, however, to the chagrin of Obaseki. The Edo State government issued a statement accusing Shaibu of impersonating the deputy governor, a claim Shaibu vehemently rejected.

Shaibu responded by accusing Governor Obaseki of being lawless in rejecting the court order,, stating, “The current governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, is lawless. If he were not, he wouldn’t accuse me of impersonation when there is a valid court judgment that reinstated me as deputy governor.”

Shaibu further criticized Obaseki for failing to obey multiple court judgments and for disregarding the policies his administration had initiated. Shaibu’s remarks reflect the ongoing tension between the two leaders as the 2024 governorship election approaches.
