NYSC To Prosecute 54 Illegally Mobilised Corps Members

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has demobilized 54 graduates from the University of Calabar (UNICAL) who were illegally mobilized for the service, in a decisive move to uphold the integrity of the scheme.

The action, aimed at preventing unqualified individuals from receiving Certificates of National Service, was confirmed in a statement released on Friday night by the Scheme’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa.

NYSC Director-General, Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, disclosed in Abuja on Friday that those involved in the illegal mobilization would face prosecution. Of the 54 affected, 19 were intercepted during the online registration process, effectively barring them from participating in the service. Additionally, the scheme withheld the issuance of Certificates of National Service for four others who had already been mobilized.

Earlier in the week, GWG.ng reported that the NYSC had invalidated the certificates of 101 graduates from UNICAL who were part of the scheme between 2021 and 2023, due to similar fraudulent mobilization practices. Following this revelation, the Pro-Chancellor of the University, DIG Udom Ekpoudom (retd.), praised the NYSC for uncovering the fraud and pledged to take disciplinary action against the university staff involved.

Surprisingly, the NYSC DG also revealed that a bread seller had been fraudulently mobilized as a graduate from the university. He commended UNICAL Vice-Chancellor, Professor Florence Obi, for bringing the illegal mobilizations to the attention of the NYSC, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and integrity in the process.

“The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar noticed discrepancies in the graduation list and promptly reported it to us. I commend her diligence. Previously, we discovered that a bread seller was mobilized as a graduate from the same institution. These incidents highlight the presence of unscrupulous individuals who generate fake matriculation numbers and courses,” Brigadier-General Ahmed said.

He further emphasized that the NYSC would strengthen its collaboration with heads of corps-producing institutions and other relevant stakeholders to combat this growing menace. Ahmed noted that any lapses in the mobilization process reflect poorly on the management of the concerned institutions, stressing the need for individuals with integrity to oversee the data entry of graduates.

In a final note, the NYSC DG urged employers across the country to verify the authenticity of the Certificates of National Service presented by job applicants, to ensure they are not hiring individuals with fraudulent credentials.
