Nasarawa Community Cheers As NGO Empowers 200 Women

Community leaders, youths, and women in  Sabongida community in Kokona Local Government Area, Nasarawa state have appealed to corporate organizations, non-governmental organisations, and international donor agencies to organize empowerment programmes for youths and women so as to boost economic activities in rural areas.

They made the appeal weekend at the launching of a recycling hub and training of 200 women recyclers and community sensitization of the BAF – Women Recyclers Empowerment Initiative.

The initiative was sponsored by the United States Africa Development Foundation (USADF) in Sabongida community and organized Chanja Datti Recycling Company Limited.

They said such empowerment initiatives would go a long way in curbing youth unemployment which is largely responsible for insecurity and assist households cope with the current economic situation in the country. 

Speaking at the event, Program Manager, Chanja Datti Recycling Company, Juliet Odhikori, said the essence of the initiative was to empower women in low-income communities who are uneducated, unskilled and lack access to gainful employment.

She said the initiative will bridge the skill gap, offer capacity development training to start business and bridge the inequality gap.

Speaking on behalf of the community, the Secretary of the Traditional Council, Ali Ismail, said the presence of more empowerment initiatives will help to address youth restlessness and make women support their households in the face of economic meltdown.

He commended Chanja Datti and the USADF for coming to the Sabongida community.

 He said the initiative will tackle indiscriminate waste disposal, manage plastic waste and help women in the households.

Also speaking, a youth leader in the community, Abawu Mainasara, said women in the community lack finance for their businesses. 

He said the initiative by Chanja Datti and USADF will boost their business capital and clean the environment.

On her part, one of the beneficiaries Lucy Mainasara, lauded the organizers. 

She said the effort has already attracted several women in the community.

Furthermore, the leader of Jaiz Bank team at the event, Muntata Adamu, said the women who enrolled in the programme would have accounts opened for them to enable them to save.

Apart from getting accounts opened in Jaiz Bank, the enrollees were presented with personal protective equipment.
