A police officer involved in a hit-and-run accident that resulted in the death of 26-year-old Phumla Mtshali has committed suicide at a hotel in Umhlanga Rocks, KwaZulu-Natal.

He took his life on Monday, 19 August 2024.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, 16 August 2024 when a black Toyota Fortuner struck Mtshali on Phoenix Highway in Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal.

The driver fled the scene without providing any assistance to the severely injured pedestrian. Although a registration plate from the vehicle was found at the scene, it was mysteriously removed by an unknown person shortly after.

Later, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a report from a farmer about a suspicious vehicle on his property. Reaction Officers responded and found a black Toyota Fortuner, damaged from an accident, in Canelands, KwaZulu-Natal. The registration plates were missing, and the vehicle was equipped with blue emergency lights.

Upon checking the vehicle’s ownership using the details from the license disk, it was confirmed that the vehicle belonged to the South African Police Service (SAPS). The vehicle had been reported stolen at the Phoenix SAPS on the same day as the accident. Further investigation revealed that this was the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run that claimed Mtshali’s life. Her family suspected that the police officer reported the vehicle stolen to interfere with the investigation.

RUSA later received confirmation that a Warrant Officer from SAPS was wanted for arrest in connection with the culpable homicide of Mtshali, who was a mother of two.

Before taking his own life at a hotel in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal, the officer allegedly contacted several of his family members. The details of the hotel and other personal information are being withheld for privacy reasons.
