UniAbuja ASUU commences indefinite strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 21-day strike notice to the Federal Government, signaling a potential resumption of industrial action if their long-standing demands are not met.

This decision was reached following a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Ibadan on Monday.

Sources within ASUU confirmed that the notice, a mandatory step under labor laws, will be formally communicated to the Federal Ministries of Labour and Education. ASUU clarified that this notice should not be seen as an ultimatum but rather a procedural requirement to ensure compliance with legal standards.

The move comes in response to ongoing disputes over the non-implementation of key agreements between the union and the government. ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, highlighted that the Federal Government has failed to honor commitments made during a meeting with the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, on June 26. The meeting had been convened to address ASUU’s concerns and prevent another strike, but the union claims the agreements reached have not been fulfilled.

Central to ASUU’s grievances is the non-implementation of the 2009 re-negotiated agreements, which have been pending over the years. Additionally, the union is demanding the settlement of accumulated academic allowances and the disbursement of the revitalization fund, which was part of a Needs Assessment Report that recommended raising N200 billion annually for five years to improve university infrastructure. Since 2013, only one installment of the fund has been paid.

Prof. Osodeke also criticized the government’s approval of new universities without providing adequate funding, arguing that this has exacerbated the challenges facing Nigeria’s higher education sector. The 21-day notice raises the possibility of yet another disruption in the academic calendar if these issues are not addressed promptly.
