The Supreme Court commenced hearings on Monday, August 19, 2024, for electoral disputes arising from the 2023 governorship elections in Bayelsa and Kogi States.

In Bayelsa, former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is contesting the victory of Governor Douye Diri. Diri, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Meanwhile, in Kogi State, Murtala Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) is challenging the election of Governor Usman Ododo. INEC had declared Ododo the winner of the 2023 governorship election.

Both cases had previously been upheld by the Governorship Election Petition Tribunals and the Court of Appeal, which confirmed INEC’s declarations on various legal grounds.
