The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ogun State, Barrister Olaniyi Ijalaye, has tragically passed away in Abuja.

According to reports Ijalaye collapsed on Monday evening shortly after attending a crucial meeting with other RECs at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters.

Sources within INEC revealed that after the meeting, which focused on the upcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States, as well as filling vacant positions in the National and State Assemblies, Ijalaye returned to his hotel room at Bon Octagon Hotel. It was there that the incident occurred.

Ijalaye, from Ondo State, had shown no signs of distress during the meeting and appeared to be in good spirits. His sudden passing has shocked colleagues and the electoral community, as he was actively involved in discussions about future electoral processes in Nigeria.

Appointed as Ogun State REC in March 2022, Ijalaye took over from Olusegun Agbaje, who was transferred to Lagos State.

Further details regarding the circumstances of his death are expected to be released soon, as the electoral body and the nation mourn the loss of a dedicated public servant.

GWG.ng reports that the death of Ijalaye is bound to upset not just his family members but also stakeholders in the polity who knew him as a REC.
