NAFDAC Seizes Petrol Tankers Used To Transport Edible Oil (Video)

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intercepted three petrol tankers in Apapa, Lagos, that were being used to transport crude edible vegetable oil.

NAFDAC raised serious concerns about the potential health risks posed by chemical contamination, as the tankers had previously been used for transporting petrol.

The operation, which was announced through a post on NAFDAC’s official X handle, highlighted the dangers associated with reusing petrol tankers for food products. The agency’s swift action reflects its commitment to preventing the distribution of potentially hazardous food items.

Following the seizure, NAFDAC officials immediately escorted the crude soy oil inside the petrol tankers to a processing facility in Sango-Ota, Ogun State. The product was then handed over to the agency’s Southwest Zonal Office for further regulatory scrutiny and investigation.

A spokesperson for NAFDAC emphasized the significant health risks posed by such practices and assured the public that the agency is taking all necessary steps to prevent contaminated food products from reaching consumers.

In response to the incident, NAFDAC’s Director-General has established a committee tasked with developing new guidelines and a code of ethics for the marketing and distribution of edible vegetable oils in Nigeria. This move aims to prevent the recurrence of such dangerous practices and ensure the safety of food products in the country..

NAFDAC reiterated its dedication to protecting public health and urged citizens to report any suspicious activities related to food and other regulated products. “We remain committed to strict enforcement and continuous surveillance to safeguard public health,” the agency stated. “The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any unwholesome practices.”
