Federal Government to Meet ASUU Over Strike Threat

The Federal Government has scheduled a crucial meeting with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other key stakeholders for Monday, aiming to address the strike notice recently issued by the union.

This announcement of a meeting with ASUU was announced by the Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, marking his first year in office which he also would provide an opportunity for the government to address the lastest strike threat. The union had issued a 21-day strike notice, raising concerns over unresolved issues including the revitalization funds for public universities, unpaid earned academic allowances, and the release of withheld salaries.

Prof. Mamman confirmed that invitations have been extended to ASUU leadership and other relevant parties for the upcoming discussions. He highlighted that many of the issues raised by the union are already being addressed, although some delays have been caused by bureaucratic processes. Specifically, he mentioned that the President had resolved the matter of ASUU’s exit from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), but implementation had been slow.

Expressing optimism of the government ahead of the forthcoming meeting with ASUU, the minister stated, “By the time we meet on Monday, some of these issues would be discussed and resolved.” He emphasized that President Bola Tinubu is committed to ensuring academic stability in the country and is determined to prevent any disruptions in the academic calendar.

Mamman also noted that the challenges raised by ASUU have been longstanding, with roots going back as far as 1981, and that successive governments have had to deal with similar strike threats. However, he assured that the current administration is focused on finding a lasting solution to these issues, saying, “We will do everything possible to make sure they don’t go on strike.”

The outcome of Monday’s meeting between ASUU and the government is eagerly awaited by many, as it could significantly impact the future of higher education in Nigeria.
