4 Reasons We Increased Passport Fee – Nigeria Immigration Service

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has provided an official explanation for its decision to raise the cost of obtaining Nigerian international passports, effective from September 1, 2024.

The announcement, which sparked widespread reactions, was clarified in a post shared on the agency’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

In a statement titled “4 Major Reasons for the Unavoidable Increase in the Price of the Nigerian Standard Passport,” the NIS outlined key factors driving the price adjustment:

  1. Enhanced Passport Quality: The NIS emphasized its commitment to maintaining the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, which necessitates ongoing improvements in passport quality and standards.
  2. Rising Production Costs: The service cited the increasing costs of materials and production as a significant factor in the price hike, aligning the fees with current economic realities.
  3. Expansion of Services: With the additional revenue from the new fees, the NIS plans to establish more passport front offices and biometric centers across the country. This expansion is aimed at easing access to passport services, reducing congestion at existing centers, and improving the turnaround time for passport issuance.
  4. Domestication of Passport Production: The fee increase is also intended to support the NIS’s initiative to fully domesticate the production of Nigerian passport booklets, reducing reliance on foreign production and enhancing the security of the process.

The NIS encouraged applicants to utilize the automated payment platform available on its official website for a smooth and efficient application process, ensuring that the transition to the new pricing structure is as seamless as possible.
