Police Vow Prosecution Of Shi’ites After Attack That Left 2 Officers Dead
The FCT Police Command has confirmed that two police officers were killed, and three others left unconscious following an unprovoked attack by members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, commonly known as the Shi’ite group. The attack took place at Wuse Junction in Abuja on Sunday.
According to a press statement issued by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the attack occurred at a police checkpoint near the traffic light in Wuse.
The statement revealed that the assailants, armed with machetes, improvised explosive devices, and knives, launched a violent assault on the police officers stationed at the checkpoint.
In addition to the loss of two officers, three others were severely injured and are currently receiving treatment in a hospital, where they remain unconscious. The attackers also set three police patrol vehicles ablaze during the confrontation.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth C. Igweh, condemned the attack in strong terms, describing it as a senseless and unprovoked act of violence. He assured the public that several arrests had been made in connection with the incident and vowed that those responsible would be brought to justice.
“The situation is presently under control, and normalcy has been restored,” the statement added.
The police have urged residents to remain calm while they continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
