NIA DG Ahmed Rufai

Following his resignation as the Director General, DG of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufai Abubakar has addressed the press, shedding some light on his decision to resign from his esteemed position in the Nigerian security architecture.

Abubakar, who briefed President Bola Tinubu before tendering his resignation, confirmed that it was “graciously approved and accepted” by the president and that there was not controversy over his decision to resign as the NIA DG.

When questioned about the reasons behind his resignation, Abubakar cited personal and family issues, though he emphasized that there was nothing serious prompting his decision. He reassured that his friendship with President Tinubu remains intact, despite his departure from the position.

As for President Tinubu’s reaction to his resignation, Abubakar refrained from divulging details, citing protocol. He suggested that the National Security Adviser (NSA) or President Tinubu might eventually share the president’s sentiments. Nonetheless, he expressed gratitude to the president for the rare opportunity to serve the nation in such a crucial role.
