The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has launched a manhunt for those responsible for the killing of two police officers during a violent clash with members of the Nigerian Islamic Movement, also known as the Shi’ites, in Abuja.

The tragic parade of the Shi’ites on Sunday near the bustling Wuse Market, left two police officers dead and at least one civilian killed. Three police patrol vehicles were also set ablaze during the confrontation.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Benneth Igweh, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his officers, vowing that those responsible for the brutal attack would be brought to justice.

In a statement issued by the force’s spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Egbetokun condemned the killings as an outrageous and unacceptable act, stating, “The unprovoked killings of police officers in the line of duty are highly outrageous and unacceptable as those who murdered these policemen have murdered peace.”

Egbetokun emphasized that the police force is determined to uncover the full extent of the attack and prevent any future violence against police personnel as the investigation continues to unfold.

The police have already arrested 97 individuals in connection with the crime, and the IGP assured that the force would relentlessly pursue justice for the fallen officers.

In his statement, Egbetokun extended his heartfelt condolences to the grieving families of the deceased officers, stating, “The IGP offers heartfelt sympathies to the grieving families of the fallen police officers, mourning their loss alongside them.” He also wished a swift recovery to those officers currently undergoing treatment.

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) called for public support and understanding in its ongoing efforts to maintain law and order amid the challenges posed by extremist threats and other forms of violent crime across the country.
