Breaking: NFF Unveils New Super Eagles Coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially named German coach Bruno Labbadia as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s Senior Men’s National Football Team.

The announcement was made in the early hours of Tuesday, following the NFF Executive Committee’s approval of the recommendation put forward by its Technical and Development Sub-Committee.

Speaking on the appointment, NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, stated, “The NFF Executive Committee has approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee to appoint Mr. Bruno Labbadia as the Head Coach of the Super Eagles. The appointment is with immediate effect.”

Born on February 8, 1966, in Darmstadt, Germany, Labbadia has an extensive football pedigree. As a player, he earned two caps for the German national team, Die Mannschaft, and enjoyed a successful career with several top-tier clubs, including Darmstadt 98, Hamburger SV, FC Kaiserslautern, Bayern Munich, FC Cologne, Werder Bremen, Armenia Bielefeld, and Karlsruher SC. Notably, he was part of the Bayern Munich squad that won the Bundesliga title in 1994.

Labbadia’s coaching career is equally impressive, with stints at some of Germany’s most recognized football clubs, such as Hertha Berlin, VfB Stuttgart, VfL Wolfsburg, Hamburger SV, and Bayer Leverkusen. He holds a UEFA Pro License, underlining his credentials as a top-level coach.

Labbadia becomes the sixth German to lead the Super Eagles, following in the footsteps of Karl-Heinz Marotzke, Gottlieb Göller, Manfred Höner, Berti Vogts, and Gernot Rohr. Notably, Höner guided the team to a runner-up finish at the 1988 Africa Cup of Nations, while Rohr successfully qualified Nigeria for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The new coach’s immediate task will be to prepare the Super Eagles for two crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Benin Republic on September 7th in Uyo and Rwanda on September 10th in Kigali. Labbadia will also oversee four additional qualifying matches slated for October and November, as the Super Eagles seek to secure their place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
