GWG Editorial: The New Revelation About VP Shettima’s 2022 Sneakers   

In a clime held hostage by the vagaries of ill-equipped political actors, the recent recall of Vice President Kashim Shettima of the hilarious sneakers slapstick during the 2022 Nigerian Bar Association conference is indeed a fitting prescription for political forbearance.

Representing the then All Progressives Congress, APC presidential candidate at the 2022 Nigerian Bar Conference, NBA, Senator Shettima who was the running mate appeared in an amusing outfit of an oversized suit with a pair of sneakers to add to the caricature.

For more than a month, Senator Shettima was the butt of social media content creators who made mockery of his refinement.

It was a surprising turnout for a man who had risen to the position of Assistant General Manager of one of the country’s largest commercial banks and had by every dose been hitherto regarded for his refinement.

Whatever, at that time Shettima took it in his strides and the mockery of the polished class did not deny him and his principal the office of President and Vice-President.

Returning to the conference this time as the sitting vice-president of the country, Shettima made fun of that social bug.

“Just before we won the elections and were sworn in, thanks to that NBA conference here in Lagos, at this very venue, I became an internet sensation for nearly a month because of my sneakers,” Shettima said last Sunday.

Making joke of the episode, the vice-president brought hilarity and self-consciousness to the distinguished gathering of learned men and women.

GWG.ng affirms that the assertions of the vice-president at the 2024 NBA conference as regards his 2022 social idiocy were more than mirth.

We commend Vice President Shettima for demonstrating a humanness that is rare among the political actors in Nigeria.

In revisiting the episode, he inevitably recognized his gaffe, demonstrating that he is not above correction or errors.

Many of our actors and public office holders find it out of place to confess their errors. As such even when they are complicit in the implementation of public policy they continue in the path of error because of their arrogant dispositions.

For too long Nigerians have been taken for a ride by arrogant political actors consumed by pride and unwilling to change tact even when at fault.

Shettima has trudged a different path and GWG.ng commends him for his human candour and present this his conduct as an exemplar to all.

Indeed, the humility and candour of Shettima over the sneaker episode has wiped away the howler and replaced it with the visage of a man of truth. This is a salutary dose that is desperately needed in Nigeria’s political clime.
