” I’m The Only One Without A Godfather In Edo Guber Race” – LP’s Akpata
Labour Party governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata, has declared that if elected in the September 21, 2024 election in Edo State, he will not be controlled by any political godfather or benefactor.
He made this clear during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Thursday.
Akpata emphasized that his loyalty would lie solely with the people of Edo State. He stated, “That is one reason they (Edo people) can trust the Labour Party government because we are answerable to the people. I have no strings attached. I am not answerable to any godfather or political benefactor.”
The upcoming election features key candidates, including Akpata, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC). According to Akpata, who is also a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) he is free from any political godfather’s influence unlike his rivals.
Akpata further clarified that his campaign is not financially backed by Governor Godwin Obaseki, whose preferred candidate is PDP’s Ighodalo. He added, “Initially, I was said to be the agent of Governor Obaseki. We were able to debunk that. Today, I was said to be sponsored by the APC. I think it is conspiracy theorizing that is most stupid.”
Akpata concluded by stating, “I am funding myself, and I have friends who believe in me and that we can do much better in Edo.”
