The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has honored Afrobeats superstar Rema with a royal plaque.

This special gesture took place on Thursday when Rema visited the Oba’s palace before his homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium in Benin City.

In addition to this, Rema had earlier joined the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Wednesday for the groundbreaking ceremony of a new arena in the state. The governor revealed that the 6,000-seat venue would be named Rema Dome in recognition of the artist’s contributions.

Governor Obaseki praised Rema as a true ambassador for both Benin and Edo State. He mentioned that the new Edo Arena would draw tourists and international stars to the region, highlighting the state’s rich culture. According to Obaseki, the Rema Dome would also enhance the state’s tourism appeal and help create job opportunities for young people.

On his X account, the governor shared, “It was a pleasure to have our global music icon @heisrema join me in breaking ground for the 6,000-capacity Edo Arena. This arena, named ‘Rema’s Dome,’ is located at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road in Benin City.”

Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, hails from Benin City. He has consistently represented Edo State with pride, showcasing the culture and history of the ancient Benin Empire through his music and performances.
