Nigerian doctors have taken to their social media handles to condemn the action of the authorities of the University of Lagos for insisting that medical students who recently lost their classmate should proceed with exams the following day.

The affected students of the University of Lagos, while alerting medical doctors, through an X account identified as @Nigerian_Doctor said,

“Please 300level Medical students of the College of Medicine University of Lagos need your help. It’s a long story but I’ll try to summarize

“So we were supposed to start our 2nd MB exam tomorrow (Pathology and Pharmacology) But unfortunately one of our classmates died today. He allegedly took his own life due to the pressure

And this guy died today. Our friend died! Our classmate!

“And the schedule was supposed to be Mon, Wed, Friday and the next Monday for our mcqs and theory. The provost is now saying the exam will no longer be spaced if we don’t start tomorrow. Meaning we will have the exams Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. This pressure is what is killing us. And now they want to make it worse. Please help usssss!”

In reaction, @Nigerian_Doctor described the action of the school as insensitive. He suggested that the school ought to have given some time for the students to mourn their colleague before proceeding with the exams.

While calling for the intervention of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and Federal Ministry of Education, @Nigerian_Doctor wrote,

“Nigerian Doctors received the sad news of the sudden death of a medical student at the College of Medicine @CmulNigeria of University of Lagos @UnilagNigeria.

“His colleagues suspect he succumbed to the stress of his studies and pressure of the upcoming exam prep.

“Reportedly, the Provost has announced that the rest of the class are now to carry on with the two weeks exams, from tomorrow.

“This is a malevolent and insensitive gesture on the part of the School for God’s Sake! What kind of inhumane training programme is this?

“A student dies and there is no pause to reflect on his death? You expect his colleagues not to mourn his death but go on with their lives right away?

“We will like to highlight the impact of this death on the mental health of these students. They need to be allowed to grieve and mourn their colleague. They need to prepare better for these exams at a later date.

“Nigerian  Doctors hope this decision is urgently reconsidered and the exam postponed. Please, kindly intervene urgently.”

Never thought my own friend will take his own life due to pressure. Rubbish system! Please send help to his course mates!

@KAY CEE27 reacted, “O wrong nau. How do I piece this together? No, no, no, no. The class can agree and decide not to write the exam for now, a lot of them are traumatised. But nobody care about these things in med school.

“Story for another day: You do not take your life just because of an exam.”
