Former MTN Group CEO, Sifiso Dabengwa, has passed away.

GWG.ng learnt that Dabengwa died on Monday morning after battling cancer for some time.

Dabengwa served as CEO of MTN from March 2011 to 2015. He stepped down during that period while the company was dealing with a large fine of ₦1.04 trillion from Nigeria. This penalty was due to MTN not disconnecting over five million users with unregistered SIM cards.

Dabengwa, originally from Zimbabwe, also briefly worked as the CEO of MTN Nigeria until 2006.

South African media reported that his death was confirmed by family spokesperson, Themba Sibanyoni. In a statement released on Monday, Sibanyoni said, “Dabengwa was a titan in the telecommunications industry and an astute businessman. His tenure as CEO of MTN Group from 2011 to 2015 was marked by visionary leadership, integrity, and dedication that drove significant advancements in the industry.”

Sibanyoni added that Dabengwa’s legacy went beyond his work in the boardroom. “He was an advocate for education and a strong believer in the power of technology to change lives,” he said.

A senior MTN executive, confirming the sad news from the company’s headquarters in Johannesburg, expressed deep sorrow. She stated that the entire MTN community is grieving since Dabengwa remained a part of the MTN family after leading the company through several important years.
