Applause As Governor Honours Highlife Legend Mike Ejeagha
Highlife veteran Mike Ejeagha is once again in the spotlight, but this time for a heartwarming reason. Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, paid a visit to the iconic musician, bringing with him a slew of honors that have sparked widespread admiration.
During his visit, Governor Mbah announced that the Enugu State government would take full responsibility for Mike Ejeagha’s upkeep going forward. This gesture comes as a significant relief for the aging musician, who has spent decades contributing to Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage through his music.
In addition to the financial support, Governor Mbah also commissioned and renamed the popular Obinagu Road in Abakpa Nike, Enugu, to Mike Ejeagha Road. The newly constructed road, which leads directly to the musician’s home, was one of four roads recently restored and completed by the state government.
Mike Ejeagha, known affectionately as “Gentleman Mike,” expressed deep gratitude for the recognition, noting that Peter Mbah is the first governor to truly honor him. “The rest just make promises and disappear,” Ejeagha shared, adding that this time, the government’s actions spoke louder than words. “One day, we just heard the loud machines working, and now he’s here again to commission the road.”

While many fans and well-wishers are thrilled to see Ejeagha finally receiving the recognition he deserves, some have expressed mixed feelings about the “late” timing of his success. Nonetheless, the outpouring of support following his recent viral resurgence is undeniable.
GWG.ng reports that in July, Ejeagha’s song gained massive attention after comedian BrainJotter featured it in a dance skit. The video quickly went viral, amassing over 10 million views, and in a touching gesture, BrainJotter donated all proceeds from the video to Ejeagha. This resurgence has led to a wave of honors and gifts for the highlife legend, including an ongoing campaign by Afripol to nominate him for a Nobel Prize in Literature.
As Gentleman Mike Ejeagha enjoys this long-overdue recognition, his fans and fellow Nigerians celebrate not just his storied career, but also the tangible support now being extended to him. Governor Peter Mbah’s actions have set a precedent, showing that it’s never too late to honor those who have contributed so much to our culture and history.
