President Tinubu in a handshake with Joe Ajaero

The Presidency has criticized Joe Ajaero, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), for accusing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of betraying labor leaders by raising the price of petrol.

Ajaero claimed that labor agreed to the N70,000 minimum wage with the understanding that fuel prices would not increase.

In response, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Print Media, refuted Ajaero’s allegation. On his verified X account, @Abdulfagge, Abdulaziz said he was present at the two meetings where Tinubu spoke with labor leaders. He stressed that no deal was made regarding fuel prices.

Abdulaziz labeled Ajaero’s claims as “dirty politics” meant to stir up emotions among Nigerians. He reiterated that during the meetings, there was no offer linked to a fuel price increase, countering Ajaero’s statements.

“I attended both meetings between President @officialABAT and Labour leaders on minimum wage. At neither meeting was any offer made for a fuel price hike. Ajaero is using dirty politics to manipulate Nigerians,” Abdulaziz stated.

GWG.ng reports that the rebuttal by the presidency of the claim of Ajaero is coming in the wake of public anger over the hike of the price of petrol which many see as capable of eroding the increased buying power from the increased minimum wage.
